Our Cullercoats Est. 1539 Tote Bag celebrates one of the oldest fishing villages on our coastline. Cullercoats was first recorded in 1539 as “Culvercoats”, with its name thought to come from the Old English *culfre* (“dove”) and *cot* (“shelter”) - the village of the dovecotes. For centuries, this was a place shaped by the sea: its flat-bottomed cobles worked the North Sea for herring and white fish, its famous Cullercoats fishwives dug for sandworms, gathered mussels and sold the catch, and by the 19th century two piers framed a bay so distinctive that it drew a whole artists’ colony to its shores.

Made from sturdy 100% recycled cotton canvas, our Cullercoats tote bag has plenty of room for all the everyday stuff you somehow end up carrying around. Bottom and side gussets give you extra space, while long reinforced handles make it easy to throw over your shoulder - ideal for a wander around Cullercoats Bay, a trip to the shops or one of those beach days where you somehow take half the house with you.

Each tote is finished with a black printed “Cullercoats Est. 1539” design - a little nod to nearly five centuries of history in one of our favourite corners of the North East coast.
