Cullercoats was founded in 1539, and its name comes from Old English culfre ("dove") and cot ("shelter") - the village of the dovecotes, first recorded as "Culvercoats". For centuries this was a place shaped entirely by the sea: its flat-bottomed cobles worked the North Sea for herring and white fish, its women - the famous Cullercoats fishwives - dug for sandworms, gathered mussels and sold the catch, and by the 19th century two piers framed a bay so distinctive that it drew a whole artists' colony to its shores.
