Cullercoats was first recorded in 1539 as “Culvercoats”, with its name thought to come from the Old English *culfre* (“dove”) and *cot* (“shelter”) - the village of the dovecotes. For centuries, this was a place shaped by the sea: its flat-bottomed cobles worked the North Sea for herring and white fish, its famous Cullercoats fishwives dug for sandworms, gathered mussels and sold the catch, and by the 19th century two piers framed a bay so distinctive that it drew a whole artists’ colony to its shores.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMade from sturdy 100% recycled cotton canvas, our Cullercoats tote bag has plenty of room for all the everyday stuff you somehow end up carrying around.
